Parsons Green once served as the village green for a community of settlers as early as the 14th century. The name Parsons Green is derived from the Parsonage built on its edge which was used as the Parson's private bowling green. It was later used by local farmers to water their cattle in Parsons Green Pond which dried up at the end of the 19th century as a result of building work on the New Kings Road. Farmers would often visit Parsons Green Pound where stray animals were rounded up. Throughout the 18th century the New Kings Road was the King's private road between Westminster and Hampton Court and Parsons Green was home to a number of royal mistresses.
Today Parsons Green is one of the most sought after areas in London and its charming village atmosphere is popular with families and professionals offering a good mix of houses and flats to buy or rent. The magnificent 'lion houses' of the Peterborough Estate lie directly opposite Parsons Green and are a short walk from Parsons Green underground station on the district line.
Parsons Green still plays host to the annual 'Parsons Green Fair' every July - a tradition dating back to the 18th century. It is also the home of the Parsons Green Farmers Market which is held every Saturday at the New Kings School on the New Kings Road just a short walk from Parsons Green station.
