Until the end of the 19th century Fulham was mainly farmland and market gardens and the Fulham Road just a narrow, bumpy lane running from central London. Fulham Palace, located at Bishops Park on Fulham's riverside, was home to successive Bishops of London from the 11th century until 1975. Fulham's proximity to the River Thames made it attractive to farmers and industry alike, but improvements to the transport system in the mid 1800s made Fulham a viable place for commuters to live and a period of intensive house building took place from around 1890.
With a good mix of houses and flats to buy or rent, Fulham is now one of the most desirable places in London to live, neighbouring Kensington and Chelsea, in the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham. With first rate shopping and restaurants at Fulham Broadway and along the Fulham and New Kings Road, Fulham is popular with single professionals as well as families attracted by large houses, excellent transport links and the green open spaces at Bishops Park, Parson’s Green and Eelbrook Common.
Fulham has two high profile professional football clubs playing in the area - Fulham and Chelsea. Fulham play at Craven Cottage, which is situated by the river next to Bishop's Park, while Chelsea's home ground is Stamford Bridge, located next to Fulham Broadway tube station. Sporting enthusiasts may wish to join the exclusive Hurlingham Club in Fulham, although the waiting list for membership is currently around fifteen years.
