Bishops Park was formally opened in 1893 after land owned by the Bishop of London was given to the people of Fulham. At the time Fulham was a burgeoning London suburb and Bishops Park was created to fulfil an urgent public health need as the once green open spaces were swallowed up for the development of much needed homes.

The Bishops Park Estate is adjacent to Bishops Park and is often referred to as 'The Alphabet Streets' owing to its street names running in alphabetical sequence. Largely built between 1899 and 1908 by a firm called Allen & Norris The Bishops Park Estate is made up of houses of differing sizes to appeal to Fulham's diverse population at the time. When first built, houses to buy cost around £400.

Bishops Park is currently undergoing a £7 million refurbishment programme, more than half of which has been given by the Heritage Lottery Fund towards the 'Bishops Park & Fulham Palace Grounds Restoration Project'. As well as the restoration of the historic Bishops Park Urban Beach, the council plans to restore the ornamental lake and picturesque bridge that leads to the original picnic area overlooking the lake. Bishops Park is set to be returned to its former glory with work due for completion in 2012.
