In the last two hundred years, Battersea has grown from the original village around Battersea Square to the large urban community it is today. Battersea was mostly farmland until the industrial revolution, when factories and wharfs sprang up along the riverside and Battersea and Albert Bridges were built to provide transport links north of the river. From the 1970s, industry began to move away from Battersea and has been progressively replaced by a growing residential community.

With the opening of Clapham Junction Station in 1863, the focus of Battersea changed from the riverside to St. John's Hill and St. John's Road, which became the main shopping centre. Battersea's urbanization was relieved by the open spaces of Clapham and Wandsworth Commons but the major attraction near the river was the 200 acre Battersea Park, offering unrivalled sporting and recreation facilities. Battersea is also home to famous landmarks Battersea Power Station and Battersea Dogs Home.

Battersea is now one of the most popular places to live for young professionals offering a good mix of houses and flats to buy or rent, and four out of ten residents are aged between 20 and 34. However, schools in Battersea are a big attraction and its popularity with young families has earned it the nickname "Nappy Valley". Battersea's Belleville and Honeywell Schools both continue to achieve excellent results and have both been rated by OFSTED as 'Outstanding'.
